Jehovah God is not man that will lie nor a human being that changes his mind (Num.23:19), when He says anything, we can always count on it.
When the Lord says "I will never leave you nor forsake you" in His word, He is saying "I will never disappoint you nor give up on you".
As for disappointment O comrade, be rest assured that God will never disappoint you. No matter what you are passing through that is, your current experience. Only keep trusting and obeying as He leads. You can never be disappointed. No, not in God.
Also, as to giving up, if God does not give up on stark sinners do you think He will ever give up on you?
Incomplete knowledge of this truth has made many choose prodigality in life. The truth is even in prodigality (in his death and lost position), the father didn't give up on the prodigal son (Lk 15:11-24). Thank God dead and lost sons can live and be found again through genuine repentance. What if the prodigal son didn't repent and return home? Even though the father didn't disappoint him but gave him all he asked for and did not give up on him as evidenced in the warm welcome given him on return, he would have been lost forever and dead forever.
Understand what our Father means when He said I will never leave you nor forsake you O comrade and don't live a prodigal life.
If there's any gap between man and God, guess who moved.
Shalom
